Gareth Chang Keynote Speaker at Commencement
Cogswell Polytechnical College is pleased to announce that Cogswell Trustee, Gareth Chang, will provide the keynote address at its upcoming Commencement. The ceremony takes place at the San Jose Marriott on Saturday, May 15, beginning at 11:00am. He has been instrumental in helping the College build ties with Chinese companies and universities.
Mr. Chang is the Chairman and Managing Partner of GC3 & Associates International LLC, a private investment and consulting company. He has over 30 years experience in developing high-tech and media businesses in the U.S. and internationally. He is currently the founding Chairman of D5 Studio which focuses on production and distribution of 3D animation, TV dramas and feature films for international markets. He is also the Chairman of Netstar Group Holding Company, a private equity funded network integration enterprise located in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, as well as Chairman/CEO of Towona Media Holding Company, a mobile TV enterprise headquartered in Beijing.
Prior to forming GC3 and Associates in 2000, Mr. Chang was Chairman and Chief Executive of Hong Kong based Star TV Group of News Corporation, the leading multi-channel satellite television network (Star Sports, ESPN, V, Phoenix TV, movies, etc – 30 plus channels) in Asia with over 300 million viewer homes. He also served on the executive committee and is a member of the board of directors of News Corporation. Prior to joining News Corporation in 1998, Mr. Chang was Corporate Senior Vice President and member of the Office of the Chairman, Hughes (Aircraft) Electronics Corporation, overseeing Washington DC and all US regional offices and additionally served as President of Hughes International, overseeing operations in Canada, Europe, Middle East, Latin America and Asia. Additionally, Mr. Chang served as President of DirecTV International, Executive Chairman of DirecTV Japan, and Chairman of Hughes-JVC Technologies.
Prior to joining Hughes in 1993, Mr. Chang spent more than 20 years with McDonnell Douglas Corporation and has held the position of Corporate Vice President and a member of the Chairman’s Executive council, responsible for all Asia and Pacific operations. Since 1979, he served as the chief negotiator and founding Executive Chairman of the McDonnell Douglas-Shanghai Aviation Executive Board, the first major US-China venture overseeing the production and sale of commercial jets in China, as well as the leader for Douglas aircraft consortium negotiations with Taiwan Aerospace and respective agencies. Mr. Chang also held the position of divisional vice president of engineering, senior vice president for information systems group, as well as co-leader for corporate strategic planning.
Mr. Chang served as the first Chairman of the American chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in 1992, and founding President of Hong Kong Aerospace Forum. Additionally, he has served on the Advisory Committee of the Export-Import Bank of the Unites States, advisor to the Office of Technology Assessment, U.S. Congress; Board of Governors of the National Center of APEC; the Atlantic Council; CSIS-Pacific Forum; Board of Directors of the National Committee on United States-China Relations; US-Taiwan Business Council; Pacific Council on International Policy; and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Mr. Chang holds a BA in Mathematics/Physics and a Doctor of Science (Hon.) from California State University and an MBA from Pepperdine University. He is an Adjunct Professor of the Chinese University of Communications in Beijing, Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University in Beijing and the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and an Adjunct Professor at Portland State University in Oregon.
Mr. Chang also served on the Council of Governors of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies and is currently serving on the Advisory Board of UCLA School of Public Policy and Affairs, Co-chairmen of Adizes Institute for Enterprise Life Cycle Change, Executive committee member of Cogswell Polytechnical College Board of Trustees, the Council of Governors of the East West Players and is a Board member of the Committee 100.
Mr. Chang has served on the boards of Apple Computer, Palm Inc., Agile software Inc., News Corporation, DirecTV, Mallinckrodt Group, SRS Labs and Linkabit Corporation (predecessor of Qualcomm). Currently, he serves on the board of Neustar Inc., the Advisory Council of Nike Inc. and Baring Private Equity Asia.
Mr. Chang is the recipient of many awards in recognition for his contributions in business, science and community affairs, including the first International Aerospace Cooperation Award by the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics (AIAA), International Citizen of the year by the State of California, Excellence in Leadership by the Chinese American Museum of History and Outstanding Personality of the Year by the Organization of Chinese Americans. More recently, Mr. Chang became a Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival award winning producer for his short film titled “August 15th”. Mr. Chang has been named one of the 125 Thinkers of the World by Fortune Magazine.
